Safety & Crisis Protocol

⚠️ If you are in crisis right now

Ember is not an emergency service and cannot get you help. If you are in immediate danger or thinking about harming yourself or someone else:

These services are free, confidential, and available 24/7.

Our crisis-detection and response protocol

Ember uses an automated classifier to detect expressions of crisis or suicidal ideation. When such an expression is detected, a crisis-referral message pointing you to the resources above is delivered before any AI-generated response. This system is not perfect and should not be relied upon as a substitute for professional crisis services. If you are in crisis, please contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988) or the Crisis Text Line (text HOME to 741741).

What this system can — and cannot — do

The classifier screens inbound messages and, on a positive detection, leads the reply with crisis resources rather than a conversational response. It is an automated screen, not a person: it may miss expressions of distress, and it can flag messages that are not actually a crisis. Ember cannot call for help on your behalf, cannot reach a person for you, and cannot intervene in an emergency. Do not rely on Ember in a crisis — use the resources above.

Human review

Certain safety signals are routed to trained members of our team for review as part of our ongoing safety operations. This review supports the safety of our community; it does not make Ember a healthcare, mental-health, or emergency service, and it is not a substitute for professional care.
